Vriesea gigantea
An epiphyte that heals through fights but hits softly, played only as a native buffer in South America.
Vriesea gigantea is a non-toxic Epiphyte that leans on healing rather than damage, and it is a modest card β its attack is low. It is native to South America with no invasive form, so the arena only fields it as a native buffer. Expect it to outlast opponents by mending rather than beat them down.
Its starter attack, Aireater, unlocks at level 1 for 2 Sun, dealing about 24 damage in a clean hit. The free once-per-battle ability, Hemiepiphytic Descent, arrives at level 25: Drops roots to the ground and takes over β the foe is driven out and pinned. It is a mid-fight mend. The advanced attack, Trichome Trap, unlocks at level 40 for 6 Sun (about 24 damage) and mends the plant as it strikes. Most of your vriesea sit below level 40, where only the starter is unlocked. None of its moves carry an initiative rider. See Moves.
Vriesea gigantea holds two working traits. Velamen Radicum (level 10) recovers 2% of max HP every checkup. Sapromyophily (level 68) makes this large bromeliad the group's decoy for any single-target effect. See Abilities.
It is non-toxic and holds no Toxin trait, so it deals no contact recoil to attackers. Despite growing as a bromeliad, its habit here is terrestrial, so it is not eligible for a Moss Pole. As a native, defensive field gear β a Cloche, or a calcium/magnesium amendment for a little DEF β helps shore up its light armor. See statuses.
At level 40 vriesea reads 103 HP with an ATK of just 17, so its own blows are weak. DEF is 2, low in the epiphyte band, so it takes hits with little armor and relies on healing instead. Its tempo is nearly even, tilting to a cruiser: slightly out-paced turn 1 on its initiative (33) and a touch quicker afterward on its SPD (34). Retreat costs 16 Sun. As a native it gains a +15% HP cushion and, while benched, projects an HP overshield onto your active. See Stats.
Matured to level 100, vriesea climbs to 190 HP and 30 ATK, while its DEF reaches only 3 β as a soft epiphyte it buys bulk in health and barely any in armor. Retreat rises to 33 Sun, and its tempo has sunk to about 1% of cap, so a mature vriesea acts last against almost anything younger.
As an epiphyte, vriesea sits in the Specialist succession group. It hits Competitor plants (perennial herbs, shrubs, broadleaf trees) for Γ1.5 and takes only Γ0.667 from them; it is weak to Ruderal plants (annual forbs, grasses, aquatics, bulbs), which strike it for Γ1.5 while resisting its blows. Against other Specialists and the off-wheel Weird group the matchup is neutral. See Weaknesses & Resistances.
Play vriesea gigantea as a native buffer that survives on healing: lead or bench it to mend through exchanges and shield your active, accepting that its own attack rarely finishes anything. It is more a collection and coin piece than a threat. On economy, it is inedible, so any nutrient you feed it banks Γ1.25 XP toward faster growth rather than coins. It plays as a near-even skirmisher leaning harder on its bulk as it levels, crossing over around level 25 β but it is always stronger at higher levels, so there is no reason to hold it back.
Leveling trades speed for power. A plantβs tempo (SPD + INI, the turn-order edge) fades as it grows, while its power (HP + ATK + DEF, net of the rising Sun cost to retreat) climbs. The crossover is the level where power overtakes tempo: below it the plant is a fast skirmisher, above it a heavyweight. Shown for each stance this plant can actually hold β native adds a HP cushion, invasive an attack edge, neutral neither β with the card at its crossover and fully grown at LvΒ 100.
