Douglas fir

Pseudotsuga menziesii

A sturdy conifer that opens fast for a tree, self-heals, and hits harder than most as an invader β€” one of the stronger cards in this group.

Overview

Douglas fir is a conifer β€” armored and durable. It is native across eastern and western North America and invasive in Africa and Europe, so it holds both roles: a wall at home, a hard-hitting attacker abroad. It is among the better cards in this batch: bulky, self-healing, and unusually quick off the mark for a tree.

Moves

Its opening attack, Raysteal (level 1), costs 2 Sun for 31 native / 35 invasive and heals a sliver: "Takes the light by force β€” strike and heal 10%." The ability Fire-Sealed Vault (level 25) does "Cones that only fire can open: +4 ATK and heal 20%." β€” a buff-and-heal. Its advanced attack, Resin Flood (level 40), costs 6 Sun for 24 / 27: "Floods the foe in resin until it sets β€” pinned, and weakened."

Abilities

From level 10 it carries Xylem Tracheids β€” a flat reduction on incoming direct attacks (armor on top of its DEF, subtracted after the damage ratio). At level 68 it adds Serotinous Cones: when it is knocked out, it chips every living enemy on the way down, so it leaves a mark even when it falls. Below level 68 it has only the damage reduction.

Features

No thorns, no toxin. As a canopy tree it is a Network carrier, lending a Sun overshield bar from the bench. Not a climber, so no Moss Pole. Between its DEF, its flat damage reduction, and its move self-heals, it is built to stay in and trade.

Stats

At level 40 it reads, native, HP 140 / ATK 23; invasive, HP 122 / ATK 32 β€” a solid attacker step. DEF is 21 and retreat 18 Sun. Its opening tempo is 40 β€” high for a conifer β€” while its sustained tempo is 25: it lands the first hit and then gets out-paced later in the fight, so use that opening. Invasive, it pays Faustian bench self-damage each attack and concedes 2 prizes on a knockout.

At Level 100

By the cap it becomes a wall: DEF 46 from wood density, native HP 276 / ATK 41 (invasive 240 / 64). Retreat rises to 38 Sun and its tempo sinks near floor β€” the quick opening of its youth fades, so it stops out-speeding anyone and simply out-tanks them. Maturing buys durability and staying power.

Weaknesses & Resistances

Douglas fir is a Specialist: Γ—1.5 into Competitors (perennial herbs, vines, shrubs, broadleaf trees), Γ—1.5 taken from Ruderals (annual forbs, grasses, aquatics, bulbs), even with fellow Specialists. Fast weeds and grasses are its worst matchup.

Gameplay uses

Native, it is a self-healing wall and a Sun-lending Network carrier. Invasive, it is one of the better single-player attackers in this group β€” durable, self-healing, and a threat even in defeat through its on-knockout chip. It is not edible, so fertilizer banks Γ—1.25 XP; feed it to level. Its bulk makes it power-favored from a low level (crossover near level 13), but it does keep a real turn-1 edge early β€” open with the first hit, then let the armor carry it.

Total power

Leveling trades speed for power. A plant’s tempo (SPD + INI, the turn-order edge) fades as it grows, while its power (HP + ATK + DEF, net of the rising Sun cost to retreat) climbs. The crossover is the level where power overtakes tempo: below it the plant is a fast skirmisher, above it a heavyweight. Shown for each stance this plant can actually hold β€” native adds a HP cushion, invasive an attack edge, neutral neither β€” with the card at its crossover and fully grown at LvΒ 100.
