Platycerium elephantotis
A dual-role fern that plays as an African native buffer or a South American invasive attacker, hard to eat and able to chip the enemy bench once matured.
Angola staghorn fern is a light Fern that plays either arena role. It is native to Africa and invasive in South America, so the game can cast it as a native buffer for your bench or as an invasive attacker. It brings a couple of genuinely useful traits and a poison-splashing attack, which lifts it above the pure fillers even though its armor is thin.
Its starter attack, Frond Flail, unlocks at level 1 for 2 Sun and lands a plain hit for about 40 native / 40 invasive damage. The free once-per-battle ability, Sporangial Barrage, arrives at level 25: Fires off every sporangium at once β strikes one plant anywhere, and feeds on the release. It leaves poison on the target. The advanced attack, Silica Shatter, unlocks at level 40 for 6 Sun (42 native / 42 invasive) and both poisons the active and splashes the enemy bench. Most of your specimens sit below level 40, where only the starter is available. None of its moves carry an initiative rider, so it never seizes a turn. See moves and statuses.
It keeps two always-on traits. Unpalatable arrives on the level 10 riser at full strength and makes the fern harder for foes to attack effectively. Spore-drift arrives on the level 68 riser and chips the enemy bench each round, derived from its real-world dispersal. Neither is gated by chance; both are steady once unlocked. See abilities.
It carries no trait keywords and no toxin, so it shows no hazard ring and its contact deals no recoil; the poison it applies comes from its attacks. Its growth habit is terrestrial, so it is not eligible for a Moss Pole. As a native, defensive field gear such as a Cloche suits its buffer role; as an invasive, offensive gear makes its poison splash hit harder.
At level 40 it reads 103 HP native / 89 invasive, with ATK of 23 native climbing to 23 invasive, a small but real edge for the attacker role. DEF is only 2, near the soft fern floor, so it takes hits with little armor. Tempo is front-loaded: turn 1 runs on its initiative (51) and later turns on its SPD (34), so it opens fast but is out-paced later. Retreat costs 16 Sun. As a native it gains a +15% HP cushion and a bench HP overshield; as an invasive it deals Faustian self-damage to its own bench on each damaging attack and concedes 2 prizes when knocked out. Matured to level 100, it reaches 190 HP native / 165 invasive and 42 / 42 ATK, but its DEF only climbs to 3 β a soft fern gains health, not armor, so it stays fragile to any real hitter. Retreat rises to 33 Sun and its tempo has sunk to roughly 1% of cap. Maturing unlocks the Spore-drift bench chip, its best payoff for leveling.
As a fern it is in the Specialist group. It hits Competitor plants (perennial herbs, shrubs, broadleaf trees) for x1.5 and resists their blows at x0.667; it is weak to Ruderal plants (annual forbs, grasses, aquatics, bulbs), which strike it for x1.5 while shrugging off its hits. Against other Specialists and the Weird group the matchup is neutral. See Weaknesses & Resistances.
As a native, use it as a hard-to-hit buffer whose Unpalatable trait and bench overshield keep a stronger ally alive. As an invasive, lean on the poison splash and, once matured, Spore-drift to grind both the active and the bench while you race the clock. Its value is also economic: it is inedible, so any nutrient you feed it banks x1.25 XP toward levels. It fights as a fast skirmisher until about level 31 as a native (about level 36 as an invasive), then its bulk takes over, so leveling it only helps.
Leveling trades speed for power. A plantβs tempo (SPD + INI, the turn-order edge) fades as it grows, while its power (HP + ATK + DEF, net of the rising Sun cost to retreat) climbs. The crossover is the level where power overtakes tempo: below it the plant is a fast skirmisher, above it a heavyweight. Shown for each stance this plant can actually hold β native adds a HP cushion, invasive an attack edge, neutral neither β with the card at its crossover and fully grown at LvΒ 100.
