Melaleuca lanceolata
A native-only Oceanian shrub with firm armor, a contact tax on attackers and a lignotuber that makes fire useless against it.
Moonah is a woody Shrub that fights as a plain, sturdy trader: it soaks hits behind shrub-tier armor and hits back for modest damage, with no special trick to lean on. It is native to Oceania and invasive nowhere, so the arena only ever fields it as a native buffer for your bench. It is an honestly unremarkable card β a tough body and little else β useful mainly as a bench buffer or a family-tree collection piece rather than a threat.
Its starter attack, Bramble Lash, unlocks at level 1 for 2 Sun and lands a measured strike for about 33 damage. The free once-per-battle ability, Shrubland Sere, arrives at level 25: Settles the slope: heal 35%, and the foe withers. β a permanent attack boost that gives its plain offense a small lift. The advanced attack, Blackthorn Barrage, unlocks at level 40 for 6 Sun (40 damage) and hems the foe in. Most of your moonah sit below level 40, where only the starter is unlocked. None of its moves carry an initiative rider, so it never seizes a turn. See Moves.
Moonah carries one working trait per riser. Extrafloral Nectaries (level 10) bills attackers 3% of their own max HP for contact, past DEF and the overshield. Lignotuber (level 68) is real Melaleuca biology β these shrubs resprout from a burl after fire β so the card is immune to Burn and healed when one is applied. See Abilities.
Moonah carries no trait keywords β no thorns, no toxin, no spore chemistry β so nothing punishes an attacker for striking it; it is non-toxic, so nothing chemical bites back. Its growth habit is terrestrial, so it is not eligible for a Moss Pole. As a native, defensive field gear β a Cloche, or a calcium/magnesium amendment for a little extra DEF β plays to its one strength, its bulk.
At level 40 moonah reads 103 HP and 19 ATK. DEF is 13, up in the firmer shrub band, so it soaks hits noticeably better than a herb or grass; damage is diminishing armor (ATK Γ· (ATK+DEF)), not flat subtraction, so that DEF blunts small attackers well. Its tempo is even: turn 1 runs on its initiative (32) and every turn after on its SPD (34), which sit close together, so it is neither a fast opener nor a fast cruiser. Retreat costs 16 Sun. As a native it gains a +15% HP cushion and, while benched, projects an HP overshield onto your active. See Stats.
Matured to level 100, moonah swells to 190 HP and 33 ATK, and its DEF climbs to 28 β a shrub firms up more than a soft herb, so a mature moonah is a genuinely tough body, though it never reaches a tree's wall. Retreat rises to 33 Sun as it roots in, and its tempo has sunk to about 1% of cap, so it acts last against almost anything younger. Maturing buys durability, and at level 68 a Lignotuber β from then on fire heals it rather than hurting it.
As a shrub, moonah sits in the Competitor succession group. It hits Ruderal plants (annual forbs, grasses, aquatics, bulbs) for Γ1.5 and takes only Γ0.667 from them; it is weak to Specialist plants (succulents, conifers, ferns, epiphytes), which strike it for Γ1.5 while resisting its blows. Against other Competitors and the off-wheel Weird group the matchup is neutral. See Weaknesses & Resistances.
Play moonah as a native buffer: bench it to lend a fragile hitter the HP cushion and overshield, or lead with it to soak damage while a stronger card recovers. It is support first and foremost, though its contact tax means attacking it is never free. On economy, it is inedible, so any nutrient you feed it banks Γ1.25 XP as a growth boost rather than paying coins. It plays as an even-tempo trader whose bulk keeps growing with level, crossing over around level 21 β but it is always stronger at higher levels in raw stats, so there is no reason to hold it back.
Leveling trades speed for power. A plantβs tempo (SPD + INI, the turn-order edge) fades as it grows, while its power (HP + ATK + DEF, net of the rising Sun cost to retreat) climbs. The crossover is the level where power overtakes tempo: below it the plant is a fast skirmisher, above it a heavyweight. Shown for each stance this plant can actually hold β native adds a HP cushion, invasive an attack edge, neutral neither β with the card at its crossover and fully grown at LvΒ 100.
