Kalmia latifolia
A well-armored shrub with a self-buff, a draining hit, a contact tax and a late taunt β a native wall from eastern North America or a European invader.
Mountain laurel is a sturdy Shrub that fights as an armored wall: middling attacks but real DEF for its tier. It is native to Eastern North America and invasive in Europe, so the arena can field it either way β as a native buffer that anchors your bench or as an invasive attacker. It is a serviceable defensive card whose toughness is its main draw.
Its starter attack, Bramblemaze, unlocks at level 1 and costs 2 Sun, dealing about 29 damage as a native and 29 as an invasive β a plain, reliable hit. The free once-per-battle ability, Bramble Barrier, arrives at level 25: A wall of thorns β the foe withers against it. It raises the plant's own ATK, so it hits harder afterward. The advanced attack, Thorn Wall, unlocks at level 40 for 6 Sun (37 native / 37 invasive) and saps the target, weakening it as it lands. Most of your laurels sit well below level 40, where only the starter is available. None of its moves carry an initiative rider, so it never seizes a turn. See Moves.
Mountain laurel holds one working trait per riser. Extrafloral Nectaries (level 10) bills every attacker 3% of its own max HP on contact, past DEF and past the overshield. Sapromyophily (level 68) then makes the thicket the group's designated victim: any time the engine chooses one card out of several, this is the one it chooses. See Abilities.
It carries no trait keywords β no thorns, no toxin chemistry β so nothing punishes an attacker for hitting it. It is non-toxic: no contact recoil and no poison rider baked in. Its growth habit is terrestrial, so it is not eligible for a Moss Pole. As a native, defensive field gear stacks on top of its already-good armor to make it a hard wall; as an invasive, offensive gear helps its otherwise modest attacks matter.
At level 40 it reads 121 HP as a native and 106 as an invasive, with ATK of 24 native versus 24 invasive β the invasive edge is slim here. DEF is 11, solidly in the shrub band, so unlike a soft herb it genuinely blunts incoming hits. Its tempo is even: turn 1 runs on its initiative (18) and every turn after on its SPD (18), both the same value, so it neither opens nor cruises faster than average. Retreat costs 14 Sun. As a native it gains a +15% HP cushion and a benched HP overshield; as an invasive it pays Faustian self-damage to its own bench on each damaging attack and concedes 2 prizes when knocked out. See Stats.
Matured to level 100, it grows to 233 HP native / 203 invasive and 43 / 44 ATK, and its DEF climbs to 21 β as a shrub it hardens into a genuine armored wall, not just a bag of health. Retreat rises to 29 Sun, and its tempo has sunk to roughly 1% of cap, so a mature laurel acts last against almost anything young but is very hard to remove.
As a shrub it sits in the Competitor succession group. It hits Ruderal plants (annual forbs, grasses, aquatics, bulbs) for x1.5 and takes only x0.667 from them; it is weak to Specialist plants (succulents, conifers, ferns, epiphytes), which strike it for x1.5 while resisting its blows. Against other Competitors and the off-wheel Weird group the matchup is neutral. See Weaknesses & Resistances.
Play it as a native wall that anchors your bench β its DEF and HP cushion let it soak hits while a hitter finishes fights, and its self-buff move lets it slowly build up its own damage. As an invasive its attacks are only middling, so it leans on the same toughness rather than raw offense. It is inedible, so any nutrient you feed it banks x1.25 XP rather than coins. It fights as an even-tempo skirmisher early and leans hard on its armor as it levels, crossing over around level 2; it is always stronger at higher levels in raw stats, so there is no reason to hold it back.
Leveling trades speed for power. A plantβs tempo (SPD + INI, the turn-order edge) fades as it grows, while its power (HP + ATK + DEF, net of the rising Sun cost to retreat) climbs. The crossover is the level where power overtakes tempo: below it the plant is a fast skirmisher, above it a heavyweight. Shown for each stance this plant can actually hold β native adds a HP cushion, invasive an attack edge, neutral neither β with the card at its crossover and fully grown at LvΒ 100.
