Overview

Sago Palm is a Conifer card with both roles: native to East Asia and invasive in Africa, eastern North America and South Asia. Native it is a cushioned wall; invasive it is a sharper attacker. See nativity and categories.

Moves

The starter attack, Raysteal, unlocks at level 1 for 2 Sun, reading 30 native and 31 invasive. Takes the light by force β€” strike and heal 10%.

The free once-per-battle ability, Fire-Climax Forest, unlocks at level 25 and costs no Sun. A forest that needs to burn β€” the foe is set alight, and the fire spreads home too.

The advanced attack, Evergreen Strike, unlocks at level 40 for 6 Sun, reading 40 native and 42 invasive. A strong, year-round blow. That is a large step up from the starter and the clear reason to level this card. See moves.

Abilities

Xylem Tracheids arrives on the first riser at level 10 at full strength β€” flat damage reduction on incoming direct attacks, from cavitation-resistant wood. It is most valuable against opponents landing many small hits.

Serotinous Cones stacks on at level 68. When this card is knocked out it chips every enemy on the board β€” cones that open only in fire. It is a parting shot that reaches past the plant that killed it, so removing this card is never clean.

Features

The species record lists no toxicity here and no trait keywords, so no poison rider applies to this card in play. For field gear, it is already durable and already fast, so gear extending its stay converts into damage. Its growth habit is not vine, epiphyte or hemiepiphyte, so a Moss Pole does not apply.

Stats

At level 40 native reads 103 HP and 18 ATK; invasive reads 89 HP and 22 ATK. Armour is 19, which is good. Retreat is 16 Sun. Opening tempo is 51, near the top of the range, with sustained tempo at 34. Invasive it pays Faustian bench damage per damaging attack and concedes 2 prizes on knockout. See stats.

At Level 100

By level 100 native reaches 190 HP and 31 ATK, invasive 165 HP and 41 ATK, with armour at 42. It matures into a durable, hard-hitting card. Retreat rises to 33 Sun and the inverted tempo has sunk to its floor, so the speed advantage does not survive β€” but the advanced attack and the death effect both do.

Weaknesses & Resistances

Conifer is in the Specialist succession group. Specialist outlasts Competitor, so this card hits perennial herbs, vines, shrubs and broadleaf trees harder. It loses to Ruderal β€” annual forbs, grasses, aquatics and bulbs. See weaknesses and resistances.

Gameplay uses

One of the stronger cards in this batch. It acts first, absorbs well, hits hard from level 40 onward, and damages the whole enemy board on the way out. The Specialist type advantage into trees, vines and shrubs makes it awkward for a large slice of the collection.

The starter attack is soft, so the card is noticeably weaker before its advanced slot unlocks β€” this is one worth levelling rather than fielding early.

It is not eaten, so a soil amendment earns no matching fertiliser coins and instead banks the Γ—1.25 XP an inedible plant pays. See the battle lab.

Total power

Leveling trades speed for power. A plant’s tempo (SPD + INI, the turn-order edge) fades as it grows, while its power (HP + ATK + DEF, net of the rising Sun cost to retreat) climbs. The crossover is the level where power overtakes tempo: below it the plant is a fast skirmisher, above it a heavyweight. Shown for each stance this plant can actually hold β€” native adds a HP cushion, invasive an attack edge, neutral neither β€” with the card at its crossover and fully grown at LvΒ 100.
